12/02/22 LTFM Celebrates 1 Year on the Plaza
This November marked the one year anniversary of Little Tokyo Flea Market (LTFM), a vintage clothing swap held on the first Saturday of each month at Terasaki Budokan’s outdoor plaza. Since the market’s launch, Tatsu, LTFM’s organizer, has fostered a thriving marketplace by developing interpersonal connections with vendors, shoppers and community members.
To spread the word and gain support for LTFM, Tatsu spent time visiting flea markets throughout Los Angeles and building a presence on social media. His efforts have successfully attracted a number of vendors specializing in vintage apparel, music, art, crafts, accessories and more.
“We’re a free market located in a historic neighborhood downtown, which presents a unique experience for our visitors,” said Tatsu. “I love meeting visitors who share the same values in sustainability through vintage shopping.”
The idea for LTFM emerged from Tatsu’s desire to integrate his decade of experience in the fashion industry with his Japanese culture. After a friend connected him to Budokan Director Ryan Lee, the two saw LTFM and Budokan as a natural fit. Together, the market and venue have connected new visitors to the neighborhood, highlighted local entrepreneurs and contributed to the vibrancy of the Little Tokyo community.
“Budokan is multifaceted, and events like LTFM demonstrate the variety of ways our space can be utilized. It’s especially a great avenue to showcase and support small businesses in and around our neighborhood,” said Ryan.
“I’ve always wanted to do something for the community and my Japanese heritage,” Tatsu expressed. “I’m thankful for Budokan and Little Tokyo since they provide a space for those like me and remind me where I’m from whenever I feel far from home.”
